DRESS & GROOMING
Dress & Grooming Standards
The dress and grooming of both men and women should always be modest, neat, clean, and consistent with the dignity adherent to representing The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and any of its institutions of higher education. Modesty and cleanliness are important values that reflect personal dignity and integrity, through which students, staff, and faculty represent the principles and standards of the Church. Members of the BYU, BYU-H, BYU-I, and LDSBC communities commit themselves to observe these standards, which reflect the direction given by the Board of Trustees in the Church publication, "For the Strength of Youth." These guiding principles apply at all CES institutions of higher education. The application of these principles may vary slightly at the various institutions in accordance with local conditions and circumstances.
Students should always maintain a modest, clean, and neat appearance. Shorts, dresses, and skirts must be knee-length or longer. Jeans, pants, or shorts, or other clothing that are worn-through, frayed, torn, or have holes in them, even if the holes are below the knee, are not acceptable campus wear. In public, leggings and tights may only be worn under clothing that is knee-length or longer.
Clothing should have sleeves and should cover the shoulders, back, and stomach. Clothing should not be form fitting, revealing, or low-cut. This includes clothing that may be tight or have a sheer fabric. Messages and pictures on clothing must be appropriate to standards of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Shoes are to be worn in all public campus areas. Flip-flops and slippers are permissible.
Body piercings beyond those appropriate for female students, are not in standards. Students who already have tattoos should cover them. Acquiring new tattoos for current students is a violation of the Honor Code.
CLARIFICATION FOR FEMALE STUDENTS
A clean and well cared-for appearance should be maintained. Hairstyles should be clean and neat, avoiding extreme styles, such as dreadlocks, and extreme colors. Women are allowed only one ear piercing per ear and any other fashion or fad body piercing is not in standards.
CLARIFICATION FOR MALE STUDENTS
A clean and well cared-for appearance should be maintained. Hairstyles should be clean and neat, with ears and eyebrows uncovered, and hair trimmed so as to be above the collar. Extreme hairstyles, such as dreadlocks, or extreme colors are not acceptable. Sideburns should not extend below the earlobe or onto the cheek. “Man buns” or ponytails on males are not appropriate. If worn, mustaches should be neatly trimmed and may not extend beyond or below the corners of the mouth. Beards are not acceptable and students are to be clean-shaven. If a student would like to obtain an exception to being clean-shaven for an authorized medical condition, please contact the Office of Honor to begin the process. Earrings and fashion or fad body piercing are not acceptable.
Attire for all school events and activities should be consistent with these standards. These standards are in effect for students at all times and in all places.
